Period Property Gutter Care in Derby
Cast-iron gutters, ornate hopper heads and deep original profiles need a gentler hand than modern uPVC. We clear period and heritage guttering carefully from the ground — no pressure washing, no ladders leaning on fragile fixings — and tell you honestly about anything that needs a specialist. Fully insured, with GoPro proof.
Original cast iron, decades of debris
Old guttering needs care, not force
Cast-iron guttering was built to last a century, and plenty of it has — but a hundred years of paint, rust and movement leaves it far less forgiving than modern plastic. Brackets work loose, joints go brittle, and the deep ogee profiles hold an astonishing amount of soil and moss before anyone notices. Handled roughly — scraped out, leant on, or blasted with pressure — an original gutter that had years left in it can crack, pull off its fixings or shed its paintwork in an afternoon.
We work period guttering from the ground with the SkyVac, so there's no ladder resting on a hundred-year-old bracket and nothing being forced. The pole camera lets us see the condition of the run as we clear it, and if we spot a failing joint, a rusted section or a bracket on its way out, we photograph it and tell you — so you can get it dealt with properly rather than find out when it fails. You can see real before-and-after jobs in our gallery.

Gently, from the ground, with the condition checked as we go.
We assess and quote first
Send us your postcode and a description of the property and we'll work out a fixed price from Google Maps — no site visit needed and no call-out fee.
We look before we clear
The pole camera goes up first so we can see the condition of the run — the state of the joints, the paintwork and the brackets — before anything is touched.
We clear it without force
The SkyVac lifts the moss and soil out by suction rather than scraping, so nothing is levered, hammered or pressure-blasted against century-old ironwork.
You get the footage and an honest report
GoPro before-and-after footage, plus photos of anything we think needs attention — so you know the condition of your guttering, not just that it's clear.
A new local name, with real experience behind it
Derby Gutters is a new business, but it isn't an inexperienced one.
An inspector's eye
Run by Stephen Fudge, a former Local Authority Cleaning Inspector with 25+ years in exterior cleaning — which on an old building means knowing the difference between dirt and damage.
Proof, not promises
You get GoPro before-and-after footage on every job. No reviews to show yet because we're just starting — so we let the footage do the talking instead.

Stephen Fudge
Owner & operator — former Local Authority Cleaning Inspector
Derby Gutters is run by Stephen, who spent years as a Local Authority Cleaning Inspector and has over 25 years in exterior cleaning behind him. Every job is his — no subcontractors, no handing it off to a van that turns up once and never again.
That inspector's eye is the whole point: a gutter isn't finished because the hour's up, it's finished when every run is genuinely clear — and the GoPro footage proves it. More about Derby Gutters.

Signs your period guttering needs attention
Old guttering tends to tell you it's struggling long before it fails outright.
Plants rooted in the run
Deep ogee profiles hold soil, and soil grows things. Grass and buddleia rooted in a gutter mean years of accumulated debris underneath.
Rust streaks or flaking paint
Orange staining, bubbling paint or bare metal showing through means water is sitting where it shouldn't and the protective coating has gone.
Weeping or dripping joints
Cast-iron sections are jointed and sealed. A steady drip from a joint in dry weather usually means the seal has failed and water is tracking behind.
A sagging or tilted run
Cast iron is heavy, and full of wet debris it's heavier still. A run that's dropped or tilted is putting real strain on old brackets.
Damp in solid walls
Older solid-wall homes have no cavity, so overflowing water soaks straight in and shows up as damp inside far faster than in a modern house.
Blocked hoppers
Ornate cast-iron hopper heads catch leaves and nesting material beautifully, and once they fill, the downpipe below stops taking water at all.
What makes period guttering different
It isn't just older — it's a different material, a different shape and a different set of weaknesses.
Deep profiles hold more
Ogee and box gutters are far deeper than modern half-round, so they can be carrying years of silt before anything shows from the ground.
Weight on old fixings
Cast iron is heavy before you add wet debris. Original brackets and fixings are carrying a load they were never meant to hold indefinitely.
Rust from standing water
Debris holds water against the metal, and where the paint has gone, rust follows — eating through from the inside out.
Ladders leant on them
A ladder resting against a cast-iron gutter puts point load exactly where the fixings are weakest — one of the most common ways old runs get damaged.
Pressure washing
High pressure strips what's left of the protective paint and can force water into joints — fast, but it takes years off the gutter's life.
Decades between cleans
Period guttering often hasn't been properly cleared in a very long time, so the build-up is compacted and heavy rather than loose.
Period homes across Derby
Derby has a lot of genuinely old housing stock. The Georgian and early Victorian townhouses around Friar Gate and the Cathedral Quarter, the villas of Strutts Park and Darley Abbey — with its mill village conservation area — and the long Victorian terraces through Normanton and the inner suburbs all still carry a great deal of original cast-iron guttering.
Out in the villages, Quarndon, Duffield and Breadsall have older stone and brick properties with deep original profiles and complex rooflines. Tall townhouses and conversions are covered on our high-level page — the same careful approach, just with more reach.

Common questions
Will vacuuming damage my cast-iron guttering?
No — suction lifts the debris out rather than scraping or levering it, which is far gentler than hand-clearing from a ladder. Nothing leans on the gutter and nothing is forced. On very brittle or badly corroded sections we'll take it steadily and tell you what we're seeing.
Do you repair or repaint cast-iron gutters?
No — we clean them and tell you honestly what condition they're in. If we find a failed joint, a rusted section or a loose bracket, we'll photograph it so you can get a specialist to deal with it properly. Repair, repainting and replacement of cast iron is a different trade and we won't pretend otherwise.
My house is listed — is that a problem?
Not for cleaning. Clearing debris from guttering is maintenance, not alteration, so it doesn't affect the fabric of the building. Anything that would change it — repairs, replacement, repainting in a different colour — may need listed building consent, and that's for you and your local conservation officer to confirm before work starts.
Why not just pressure wash them?
Because high pressure strips the protective paint that's keeping the iron from rusting, and can force water into joints that are already tired. It looks quick, but on old guttering it takes years off the life of something that could otherwise keep going for decades.
How often should period guttering be cleared?
Usually more often than modern uPVC, because the deep profiles hold more and the consequences of an overflow are worse on a solid-wall house. Twice a year suits most period homes with trees nearby — our maintenance plan handles that automatically.
